Key Takeaways

  • Santa Monica Studio pushed God of War Laufey’s PS5 release from February 16 to May 20, 2027, to add “finishing touches.”
  • The game follows Faye, voiced by Deborah Ann Woll, through an afterlife called the Everywhen, while Christopher Judge returns as Kratos in a supporting role.
  • Some observers suggest the delay creates distance from Grand Theft Auto VI, but the studio cited only additional polish.

God of War fans will have to wait a little longer to experience Faye's journey, as Santa Monica Studio has officially delayed God of War Laufey until May 20, 2027.

The PlayStation developer announced the news on Wednesday, Nov. 4, confirming that the PS5 exclusive will no longer arrive on its originally scheduled Feb. 16 release date. Instead, the team is taking an additional three months to polish the game.

"Since the reveal of God of War Laufey in June, we've been deeply grateful to see so much excitement for Faye's journey through the Everywhen," the studio wrote in a statement shared on X.

"We don't take for granted the trust placed in the studio to make an extraordinary experience worthy of the passion and dedication of our fans."

Santa Monica Studio said the additional development time will let the team refine the experience before launch.

"We will make the most of each moment until then by putting in the finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential," the statement continued.

God of War Laufey shifts the spotlight from Kratos to his wife, Faye, voiced by Deborah Ann Woll. The story follows Faye after her death as she awakens in a mysterious afterlife known as the Everywhen.

The upcoming adventure takes place alongside the events of 2018's God of War and 2022's God of War Ragnarök, offering a different perspective on the franchise's mythology.

Christopher Judge will reprise his role as Kratos, although the character will serve in a supporting role rather than as the main playable protagonist.

The game also introduces Phranque, a mysterious cosmic cube voiced by Jack Quaid, and Rue, an enchanted ribbon voiced by Perlina Lau. A previously released 23-minute gameplay presentation highlighted Faye's more acrobatic fighting style.

Preorders opened in September, while a $149.99 Collector Box featuring an illuminated Faye statue became available through PlayStation Direct in October.

Although Santa Monica Studio cited additional polish as the reason for the delay, some observers have suggested the new release window could provide more distance from other major releases, including Grand Theft Auto VI. The developer hasn't confirmed any scheduling considerations beyond improving the game.

The announcement drew mixed reactions online, with some fans expressing disappointment and others welcoming the extra development time.

"On behalf of everyone on the team, we appreciate your patience and we'll be back to share more updates soon!" the studio concluded.
