Key Takeaways

  • Bethesda revealed The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel and its logo in a Todd Howard–hosted 40th anniversary video, eight years after announcing the game.
  • The game takes players to Hammerfell, home of the Redguards and the port city Sentinel, which the series last explored in 1996’s Daggerfall.
  • Bethesda began active production in 2023 using Creation Engine 3 but announced no release date or platforms and warned fans that more details remain some time away.

Eight years after announcing The Elder Scrolls VI, Bethesda Game Studios has revealed its official title: Sentinel.

The title and logo appeared at the very end of "Celebrating 40 Years of Bethesda Game Studios," a video posted by the company to celebrate its lengthy journey in video gaming. A short teaser followed, showing a scroll unearthed from desert sand with the line "Embark on your next journey to Tamriel in The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel."

Series director Todd Howard hosts the video from Bethesda, Maryland, where the studio was founded. He traces its history from a 1986 physics-based sports game through Arena, Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout, and Starfield.

Howard admitted that "everyone is always asking about The Elder Scrolls VI" and said the anniversary felt like the right moment to answer with a name.

The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel’s name refers to a major port city in the series’ land of Hammerfell and home to the Redguards. The region sits west of Cyrodiil and southwest of Skyrim, and the series last explored the city in 1996's Daggerfall.

The announcement backs up reports from late last month, which named Sentinel as the title and Hammerfell as the setting. That report also said the story centers on the history and secrets of the Elder Scrolls themselves.

Players shouldn't expect more info about the game right away. "Development continues, and while it'll be some time before we're ready to share more, it feels great to finally reveal the name and location with you," Bethesda wrote. It previously announced the game at E3 in 2018.

The reveal did not include a release date or platforms.
