Nicolas Cage says he is "currently a little bit homeless," living in a hotel after a massive sinkhole forced him out of his Malibu home in September.
The actor made the remark during an LA Comic Con panel on Saturday (Oct. 31), after the moderator asked about his Halloween plans.
In a fan-recorded video of the Q&A, Cage explained, "Something happened in my house in Malibu, so I'm just sort of living in a hotel, so I don't have the normal trick-or-treaters I would like to enjoy tonight. But after we're done, I'll take my daughter out trick-or-treating somewhere in Santa Monica."
Cage was referring to his 4-year-old daughter, August. He also said he'd be "kind of dressed like Castor Troy tonight.” He also said he planned to watch The Shining later that evening.
The 62-year-old actor’s situation stems from a sinkhole that developed near his oceanfront property on Sea Level Drive. Malibu red-tagged 31 properties along the street, including seven deemed hazardous and 24 that lost safe vehicle access. Officials said emergency crews could no longer reliably reach the homes.
The collapse created a hole roughly 25 to 30 feet deep and 30 by 60 feet wide, taking part of Cage's driveway and damaging his deck, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Meanwhile, NBC News reported that aerial images could not establish whether the house itself sustained damage.
Cage has since obtained four permits for protective and preparatory work, costing $3,158 total, according to the Los Angeles Times. Meanwhile, the Sea Level Drive Homeowners Association is overseeing road repairs after replacing its initial contractor.
It remains unclear when evacuation orders will be lifted or when Cage can return home.
Up next, Cage playsJohn Madden in Amazon MGM's Madden, out Nov. 11, and will appear in Season 5 of HBO's True Detective.
