After reaching a settlement with Miami's Jackson Memorial Hospital, the institution that leaked his medical records to ESPN, Jason Pierre-Paul is suing The Worldwide Leader in Sports and Adam Schefter. for posting the personal information on Twitter.
Per New York Post:
Shortly after Schefter posted Pierre-Paul's medical records, ESPN issued a statement, claiming, "The HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) does not apply to news organizations." Nearly one month later, Schefter spoke with SI.com's Richard Deitsch about the tweet. “I know news organizations are not governed by HIPAA laws, but in hindsight I could and should have done even more here due to the sensitivity of the situation,” he said. “We’ve got a great group of editors and production staff, and I could have leaned on them even more.”
The suit doesn't indicate how much JPP is seeking in financial damages.
