Actress Meagan Good says being a video vixen in a 2000s 50 Cent music video helped her break out of being typecast as a teen.
Good, who stars in the fourth season of legal drama Reasonable Doubt, discussed the career pivot in the Tuesday (Nov. 3) episode of The Crew Has It.
After playing teens in Cousin Skeeter and Eve’s Bayou, in 2003, she appeared as a love interest in Fifty’s 2003 music video for “21 Questions.”
"For me at that time in my life when I was about 19, I was still playing like 14 and 15. And I made a conscious decision at that time to do the ‘21 Questions’ video because I knew that this could be a national commercial of showing people she's arrived as a young woman,” Good explained around the 23-minute mark of the video below.
“And I knew that it would change people's perspective of me and they would see me in a different light. And so that's exactly what it did.”
Good recalled receiving pushback from her manager when she considered being in the “21 Questions” video. The song was Fifty’s second No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, where it spent four consecutive weeks on the chart.
"Making that transition from child actor to adult actor is really hard,” Good said. “People have a hard time seeing you as an adult, acknowledging that you're 20, 21, you know, and sometimes you're kind of forever in people's mind a certain way."
She also explained that after the music video, she was typecast into a new type of role.
“It worked so well that every role basically that I got for the next decade was the pretty girl, the love interest, the girl next door,” she said.
Good added she was later passed on for serious roles later casting directors considered her “too sexy.”
“Maybe it’s something I’m giving off,” the actress mused.
Now 45, Good has since scored lead roles in Prime Video sitcom Harlem, Divorce in the Black, and Reasonable Doubt, where she plays lawyer Regina Harris.
