Key Takeaways
- Maino named 50 Cent as a rapper who “went bad” lyrically during a discussion about aging on Let’s Rap About It.
- Joe Budden disagreed, prompting Maino to jokingly ask his team to cut Budden’s mic.
- The exchange follows months of tension between the podcast’s hosts and 50, who accused them of owing $250,000 for their recording space and called them “squatters.”
A friendly conversation about rappers getting worse as they got older on the Lets Rap About It podcast led to Maino calling out 50 Cent, and Joe Budden leapt to the G-Unit leader’s defense.
In a new episode of the podcast co-hosted by Maino, Jim Jones, Fabolous, and Dave East, Budden was the guest who engaged the co-hosts (minus East) about still being able to come up with a hot 16 if he got back into the booth.
“Don’t get it twisted,” Budden began (around the 35-minute mark of the video below). “If I picked up a pen, I don’t think that I’m far off from where I was.”
This sparked the others to voice their opinion about rapping as you get older, with Fabolous being the first to respond by explaining he believes lyricists get better as they age. “Some people, not everybody,” he clarified.
That shifted the conversation to focus on rappers who “went bad,” which caught Budden off guard. “If you lose the passion, you’re going to go bad,” Fabolous explained.
After Budden asked for an example, the first person to speak up quickly was Maino, who named Fif, the podcast’s long-term opp. Jones said “Damn,” followed by Maino saying “Let me shut the fuck up.”
Budden eventually came to Fif’s defense by saying that he thinks the G-Unit rapper can still turn it on if he needs to. “I don’t think he went bad,” Budden said. “I think if he got in the studio…he can go in there and write four theme songs.”
Maino jokingly ordered his team to cut Budden’s mic, and it makes sense he wouldn’t want to hear any positive commentary on Fif’s artistry. The podcast’s hosts and Fif have been beefing for months. In December, Fif posted on social media that the show’s hosts are “squatters” who owe $250,000 for the place where they’re filming their podcast. “These bums are trying to win best dressed award and can’t pay their bills,” he wrote.
That particular post inspired Maino to attack him on social media, writing, “Meet Killer Curly Ladies & Gentlemen…He Helped Me Get My Record Deal Before So Imma Always Be Grateful, So It’s Gone Hurt Me To Drag This N***a To Hell! Fuck Is The Problem Curtis? What Has Your G Unit S-String In A Bunch N***a? Is It The Bitch Or The Diabetes? But Let’s Rap About It!!!”
