The HOV Bowl was always inevitable.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said as much himself when announcing on Monday (Oct. 26) that Jay-Z would indeed be leading the Apple Music Super Bowl LXI Halftime Show, thus putting a sizable exclamation point on the 25-time Grammy winner’s recent series of anniversary-marking live performances and legacy-focused interviews.
“When we first reached an agreement with Roc Nation to produce the show, I had just one request: that Jay-Z take the stage himself one day, whenever the moment felt right to him,” Goodell said. “I couldn’t be more excited for fans around the world to experience the artistry, creativity, and cultural impact he will bring to the Super Bowl stage.”
Now that the Super Bowl gig is official, there are those who will spend the next few months pointing to what they see as another inevitability: a new HOV album.
Below, we take a closer look.
What has Jay-Z said about his Super Bowl Halftime Show performance?
Jay will almost certainly say more in the months ahead, but for now, all we have is a quote tucked into Monday night’s press release.
“From Reasonable Doubt to standing on the Super Bowl Halftime stage, this has been a journey,” he said. “Thirty years of music, work, and culture on the world's biggest stage. This run continues to be a dream come true.”
The spirit of these remarks is in line with how HOV has spent his 2026; namely, he’s not afraid to look back with reverence while pondering what’s next.
What has Jay-Z said about the possibility of a new album?
Again, not very much. In an interview with Complex alum Frazier Tharpe for GQ earlier this year, Jay, whose most recent solo full-length as of this writing stands as 2017’s acclaimed 4:44, said that a hypothetical new album from him needs to be both “a true representation” of how he feels at the moment, and a “timeless” work.
We also got chatter this year suggesting that HOV may already have a new album in the can. In August, such talk caught fire thanks to some remarks from Ray Daniels, though the blaze was quickly extinguished when Roc Nation labeled the claims “fake news.”
What’s the precedent here?
Bad Bunny, the most recent Super Bowl Halftime Show headliner, did not roll out a new album in tandem with his performance. Kendrick Lamar handled things differently when headlining the previous year, as GNX arrived roughly two months before he took the stage.
Usher, who led the 2024 edition, opted for an even more strategic approach, as his Coming Home album dropped a mere two days before he headlined the Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show.
All that to say, there is no real uniformity in how artists capitalize on securing the world’s biggest stage.
Do you think Jay-Z will drop a new album soon?
Give us your two cents below. The HOV Bowl is set to hit the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California on Feb. 14.
