Grand Theft Auto VI, believe it or not, is now roughly a month away.
Apparently, that leaves more than enough time for Daft Punk fans to pick apart an unsubstantiated claim positing that the defunct duo was initially approached about scoring the certain-to-be-incomprehensibly-successful Rockstar Games title.
In a perhaps futile effort to inject some nuance into the conversation, we’re taking a closer look. Keep reading for more.
What’s the claim, and who made it?
In short, the claim, stemming from a lone X post made by @hasitleaked on Monday (Oct. 19), purports that “Daft Punk’s management” was presented with the idea of the duo handling the score for GTA VI, with a virtually “unlimited” budget also cited. None of this has been confirmed as of this writing, and @hasitleaked is the sole source of the claim.
Expectedly, some were quick to run with the claim, while others were just as quick to question its veracity while urging transparency in how, exactly, such alleged intel could be gleaned. Among Daft Punk fans, specifically, @hasitleaked isn’t exactly a beloved institution. Notably, the duo parted ways back in 2021.
What has Rockstar Games said?
Nothing, but Complex has reached out for comment.
What has Daft Punk said?
Also nothing, though Complex has contacted a former rep for the duo.
Is Daft Punk involved with GTA VI at all?
Technically, no. However, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, one half of Daft Punk, is a producer on Travis Scott’s “RHYNO,” a new song included on the game’s soundtrack.
Who scored GTA VI?
The honor of composing the game’s original score went to another beloved French duo, Justice, who recently rolled out a new GTA VI single featuring SZA, Tame Impala, and King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard.
