Despite public opinion, Nelly and Ashanti share diaper duties for their 2-year-old son, KK.
The couple, who will star in the second season of Peacock’s Nelly & Ashanti: We Belong Together, discussed their shared responsibilities for their son on the Wednesday (Oct. 28) episode of The Breakfast Club. Nelly also has two older biological children from previous relationships, while also being a legal guardian to his niece and nephew after their late mother, his sister Jackie Donahue, died from a battle with leukemia in 2005.
The revelation about Nelly’s diaper-changing comes one year after a scene in the first season of We Belong Together, where he informed Ashanti about his refusal to change KK’s diapers.
“I changed them when I said it, but it just wasn't a consistent change,” the three-time Grammy winner said in the video below. “It's like, yo, if the nanny's within earshot, I'm paying for that.”
Ashanti interjected: “He actually changed [KK’s] very first diaper. We slept in the hospital room when he was born. He popped up first to change the diapers.”
Last December, Nelly made it clear in an interview with DJ Envy for 96.1 The Beat that he’s “changed Pampers” for his children. “The fact that people act like changing Pampers makes a difference in your life is, like, so amazing to me,” he said. “I have never seen anybody go to the moon because an astronaut changed their diapers.”
Months before then, Nelly told People that the public “took a joke and made it into a debate.”
Season two of Nelly & Ashanti: We Belong Together premieres Nov. 19.
