In case you were snoozing last night at 1:30 ET, you may have missed the news that the Canadian women’s hockey team won Olympic gold against their staunch rivals, the United States, in Beijing.
Our ladies were looking for redemption after losing to the States at the 2018 games in South Korea. After a stellar performance Wednesday night, the team was able to secure the gold, winning 3-2.
People are especially pumped that Canada’s Sarah Nurse, who scored the first goal of the game, became the first Black woman to win gold in hockey at the Olympics.
Earlier this month, Nurse told Complex Canada that one of her goals is to make hockey a more inclusive sport for athletes at all levels, especially people of colour.
“We’re at a very pivotal moment where if we don’t create a more inclusive environment, where everybody from every single walk of life feels welcome and included in our sport, it’s going to be stagnant, and it’s not going to grow,” she said.
Nurse also broke another record by scoring the most amount of points in an Olympic tournament.
Canadians are also pumped for team captain Marie-Philip Poulin, who scored two of three of Team Canada’s goals. She also now has three game-deciding goals under her belt.
Overall, it’s safe to say that Canada is very proud of their women’s hockey team.
