German skater Paul Fentz is clearly a Game of Thrones fan. On Friday, during the men’s free skate competition in Pyeongchang, he performed in a Game of Thrones-inspired costume to the television show’s moving theme song.
Fentz performed his routine wearing legwarmers—which took the place of boots—and a burgundy and gold costume embellished with a crest. He also wore one gold glove in what appeared to be a nod from the show’s character Jamie Lannister, who has a metal hand in the show. Fentz started his routine in a crouched position, his hand dramatically held in a fist.
Unfortunately, Fentz didn’t end up winning the competition: At one moment during his program, he was supposed to land a quad, but instead went with a triple and landed uneasily. Yuzuru Hanyu and Shoma Uno of Japan, and Javier Fernandez of Spain, took gold, silver, and bronze, respectively.
This wasn't the only unabashed pop culture-referencing routine. During pairs free skating, China’s Yu Xiaoyu and Zhang Hao performed with a Star Wars medley that incorporated "Luke & Leia" from the earliest trilogy and "Duel of the Fates" from the prequels.
