Denzel Washington will bring his two-time Oscar winner status and sustaining star power to a new thriller helmed by Mission: Impossible franchise staple Christopher McQuarrie.

This week, word of the 2027-dated project, which doesn’t yet have an official title, broke via industry trades. The Hollywood Reporter says the film, penned by Scott Barkan and Gregg Zehentner, zeroes in on the tale of an ex-detective who secures an early release from prison after learning he has brain cancer. Naturally, his past comes back to haunt him despite his best efforts to reconnect with family.

For now, the Amazon MGM and United Artists film, previously known under the title The Frame, is slated for an Oct. 1 theatrical rollout. Washington leads the cast.

Complex has reached out to Amazon MGM reps for comment. This story may be updated.

The McQuarrie joint is now one of two Denzel projects set for the new year. Originally, we were set to be getting another Denzel title, originally billed as Here Comes the Flood but since renamed The Take, before 2026 closed its doors. However, that project, also starring Robert Pattinson, has since been pushed to 2027.
