Ice Cube and Nia Long are heading back to the road together in their classic Are We There Yet? franchise, this time as grandparents.
The reunion has been announced for Are They Gone Yet?, the third installment in the Are We There Yet? franchise, according to Deadline. The project, which doesn’t currently have a release date, is in early development after being acquired by Skydance Sports.
The last time Cube and Long shared the screen in the franchise was nearly two decades ago in Are We Done Yet?, the 2007 sequel to the original 2005 road comedy. The entertainers first acted alongside each other in 1991 hood classic Boyz N the Hood, directed by the late John Singleton.
In Are We There Yet?, Cube’s character of Nick Persons began dating Suzanne Kingston (Long), mother to a mischievous set of siblings, Lindsey and Kevin, played by Aleisha Allen and Philip Daniel Bolden, respectively. The movie also had a spinoff television show, which lasted for 3 seasons from 2010 to 2013.
In a statement, Cube expressed that Are They Gone Yet? feels like an extension of his decades-long work in entertainment.
"We built something special with this franchise. Audiences grew up with Nick Persons, and now Nick's got grandkids,” he said. “Time flies. Partnering with Skydance to bring this story to a new generation is exactly the kind of move CubeVision was built for, and I am excited for the new partnership.”
Are They Gone Yet? isn’t the only franchise extension that the rapper and actor has planned. Cube is also in talks to return for 24 Jump Street alongside Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, and Ride Along 3 with Kevin Hart is also in early development.
