Shemar Moore's next mission officially has a home. After months of uncertainty surrounding the future of S.W.A.T.: Exiles, Sony Pictures Television has struck a U.S. distribution deal with STARZ, with the action drama set to premiere on September 25. The 10-episode series will also debut across multiple international markets, marking the franchise's first expansion beyond the original CBS series.
According to Deadline, the announcement closes the loop on a project that spent much of 2026 searching for a domestic buyer after production wrapped earlier this year. Sony moved forward with filming before securing a U.S. distributor, then showcased completed episodes to potential buyers during screenings in Los Angeles, New York, and London.
The strategy paid off, with STARZ acquiring first-window U.S. rights while Sony also completed distribution deals throughout Europe, Latin America, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and Africa. The studio is also reportedly in discussions with Netflix regarding second-window streaming rights.
Moore, who reprises his role as Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson, celebrated the news following the sale. "S.W.A.T. Exiles is coming in hot!" he said. "I couldn't be more excited that STARZ is bringing this next chapter to audiences in the U.S. A huge thank you to Sony Pictures Television for believing in this franchise and continuing to invest in what we've built together." He added that the worldwide rollout makes the moment even bigger: "Fans everywhere will get to experience this epic new ride together."
The spin-off picks up after Hondo is forced out of retirement following a failed high-profile mission. He's assigned to lead an experimental S.W.A.T. unit made up of inexperienced, unpredictable recruits, forcing the veteran officer to mold a new generation into a functioning team.
Alongside Moore, the cast includes Ronen Rubinstein, Freddy Miyares, Lucy Barrett, Zyra Gorecki, and Adain Bradley. Original S.W.A.T. stars Jay Harrington and Patrick St. Esprit return as Deacon and Commander Hicks, while David Lim reprises Victor Tan in the season's penultimate episode. Former Lucifer executive producer Jason Ning serves as showrunner.
Sony first announced S.W.A.T.: Exiles after CBS ended the original S.W.A.T. following its eighth season. Rather than shelving the franchise, the studio developed a standalone continuation centered on Hondo, produced it independently, and brought the finished series to market. That approach ultimately attracted buyers worldwide while allowing Sony to retain creative control during development.
Sony executives view the series as another step in building the S.W.A.T. brand into a global franchise. "The response to S.W.A.T. Exiles has been extraordinary," Sony Pictures Television Chairman Keith Le Goy said, calling the STARZ agreement and international sales a validation of both the franchise's enduring popularity and the studio's independent production model.
