What was supposed to be one of Philadelphia's biggest gospel celebrations instead became one of the weekend's most talked-about viral moments. Kirk Franklin never got to perform at the "Gospel on Independence" concert after severe weather shut the event down, and organizers have since confirmed there are no plans to reschedule the show.
According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, Franklin was set to headline the annual Wawa Welcome America event at Independence Mall after opening performances from Paula Holloway and a choir featuring more than 100 singers from churches across the Philadelphia region. But as lightning and thunder moved into the area, organizers delayed the 7 p.m. concert in hopes the weather would pass. Officials ultimately canceled the performance, and a heavy downpour followed shortly after Franklin departed.
Even without taking the stage, Franklin made sure fans saw him before leaving. The gospel icon climbed onto the roof of an SUV as concertgoers exited the venue, waving to the crowd, thanking them for waiting, and promising he'd return.
The day, however, wasn't without controversy. Before the concert was officially called off, Franklin was confronted by a man who repeatedly shouted, "You need to repent."
Video shows Franklin attempting to approach the man, apparently trying to calm the situation with an embrace. The exchange quickly changed after the attendee declared, "You and your wife are going to go to hell."
At that point, security stepped between the pair and physically restrained Franklin while officers escorted the man away from the area.
Later, Franklin addressed the canceled concert on Instagram, making it clear that he shared fans' frustration. "I was really excited about it," he said in a video, explaining he had planned to deliver "an incredible concert" in Philadelphia. In the caption, he joked, "I need the weather to repent! LOL! 😂❤️🙏🏽."
He also promised the city another opportunity to see him, writing, "People were really disappointed. But I need you to know that I'm more disappointed because I was really, really, really ready to go. I love Philadelphia. I'll get back, man. I can't let Philly down like that."
