Charlamagne Tha God trolled DJ Akademiks by claiming that his employee discount worked at Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt pop-up in New York City.
As of the time of this writing, multiple pop-ups and celebrations for the 30th anniversary of Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt are occurring in New York, where fans can listen to Hov’s music and get exclusive merch to commemorate his music.
Charlamagne Tha God posted a carousel on Instagram of him enjoying the pop-up in an unused Manhattan subway station. In one of the videos, he posted himself examining a piece of merch while talking to someone behind the camera. “We’ll see if my employee discount works,” he joked.
In the caption for the video, Charlamagne “confirmed” that it did — which, if you’ve been paying to his current back-and-forth with Akademiks, you’d know that this post was a response to the latter’s comments about him earlier this month.
Akademiks has made it clear that he’s not the biggest fan of Jay-Z, and he has a vendetta against Roc Nation. Akademiks has suggested that Charlamagne works for Jay-Z — seemingly stemming, most recently, from Charlamagne’s positive opinion of the rapper’s Roots Picnic freestyle.
“It hurt my heart watching my hip hop media idol Charlamagne spit Roc Nation talking points,” wrote Akademiks on X. “I’m speechless. I was proud of Joe Budden tho at least he not on script even tho he def love him some HOV. The rest of yall shills idc. Yall voices ain’t loud enough.”
Prior to that, Akademiks took a jab at Roc Nation, saying that the company was “tryna sue their way and buy out authentic hip hop conversations.”
“It’s gon be an interesting year,” he wrote. “Cuz we literally know how yall OGs been rockin.. The JIG is really UP.”
Charlamagne originally shared his thoughts about Jay-Z’s freestyle in an Instagram post, writing, “Getting dissed by Jay-Z is one thing. Realizing Beyoncé probably feels the same way? That’s devastating.”
Jay-Z’s freestyle that has inspired all of this controversy featured him going hard at his musical opps, apparently including Akademiks’ pal Drake, as well as Nicki Minaj.
“The jig is up/N***a I’m up 10/Wrong chart, champ, you gotta look up again/N***as look up to Hov/I never looked up to them,” he rapped.
