We’re now nearly a week removed from the release of Watch Dis!, the debut solo studio album from Yung Miami, and fans are still zeroing in on key lyrics from the project.
Quick to garner attention was “Dear JT,” a mournful track addressing her “embarrassing” fallout with her fellow City Girls alum. But it’s arguably “Ride for You,” a ballad featuring Summer Walker, that is turning the most heads thanks to its apparent allusions to Sean “Diddy” Combs.
Below, we take a closer look.
When did Diddy and Yung Miami date?
Chatter of the two potentially being romantically involved kicked off in earnest back in 2021, though an outright confirmation didn’t arrive until the following year. The relationship was widely characterized as an open one, with comments from Miami in 2023 suggesting they had split but remained friends.
What have Diddy and Yung Miami said about each other?
In a 2022 episode of Miami’s Caresha Please podcast, Diddy said that he and the “Spend Dat” artist had “great times” together. Later that same year, he disputed the “side chick” label being applied to Miami, saying she was “very important and special” to him.
In September of last year, Miami was among those who contributed character letters ahead of Diddy’s sentencing on two prostitution-related charges.
“I want to be clear that I cannot speak on or defend anything that may have happened before I met Sean Combs,” Miami said at the time. “I do not condone any wrongdoing. I can only speak from my personal experience and the man I’ve come to know over the past four years. For three of those years, I was in a public relationship with Sean, and during that time, I witnessed—and came to know—a different person than the one often portrayed. Behind the scenes, he was loving, genuine, supportive, and always encouraging. He motivated me, believed in me, and helped me grow both personally and professionally.”
Revisit the full letter here. Diddy was ultimately handed down a 50-month sentence, and he’s currently set to be released from federal custody in February 2028.
Is “Ride for You” really about Diddy?
All signs point to yes, and Miami herself seemed to confirm as much during a Breakfast Club interview earlier this month.
“We showed up for each other. … Dating somebody like that was just a different experience,” Miami said, looking back on her time with Diddy. “I always feel like he did nothing but build me up. He took me from where I was and just put me on a different pedestal and was always just like, ‘You a queen.’”
There are two apparent allusions to the Bad Boy Records mogul on “Ride for You,” including a nod to his former “Love” moniker, like so:
“That n***a said his name was ‘Love,’ and I fell in it”
St. Barts, where Miami and Diddy once rang in the new year, also gets a mention:
“I’m the one you gave your heart, makin’ love in St. Barts”
Watch Dis! is out now, complete with features from Travis Scott and Quavo, among others. Unfortunately, a Drake-centered reworking of Miami’s Hot 100 hit “Spend Dat” failed to materialize, though the album does include two remixes of the track.
