Drake’s affinity for a certain Grammy-nominated George Strait hit, which should be common knowledge for longtime fans, was on full display during a recent club appearance.
As seen in a clip making the rounds on social media, the Iceman chart-topper, fresh off rolling out three new albums at once in May, playfully cautioned that he was about to give partiers something “a little different” than what they might be expecting with his song choice.
“Shit might get a little, um, different than what you’re used to hearing in the club,” he said before letting Strait’s 1987 hit “All My Ex’s Live in Texas” ring out. “But I know me and Ben will understand it though.”
Presumably, this clip stems from the same Houston-area club appearance we previously reported on during which Drake was seen rapping along to Z-Ro’s “Mo City Don Freestyle” alongside Bun B. The 6 god also included Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas” in his behind-the-booth selections.
The Strait spin, though somewhat widely presented on social media as an unlikely choice, should come as little surprise to those who’ve been around for the duration of Drake’s rise to global superstardom. On “HYFR (Hell Ya Fucking Right),” a Lil Wayne-featuring (and Grammy-nominated) track from 2011’s Take Care, Drake opens the first verse with a direct shoutout to Strait and the 1987 country hit, like so:
“All my exes live in Texas like I'm George Strait”
Strait and Drake are both kings of the charts, with numerous RIAA certifications to their names. In the latest Billboard 200 update, Drake’s aforementioned Iceman, released alongside Habibti and Maid of Honour, fell from the top spot for the first time since its release. The position is now held by Olivia Rodrigo’s you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love.
