Teyana Taylor thought she knew what to expect at the 2026 BET Awards, and then Janet Jackson walked onstage.

The multi-hyphenate was visibly stunned Sunday night at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles when Jackson made a surprise appearance to present her with the BET Icon of the Year Award.

"Oh my God, bitch, I'm gagging," Taylor exclaimed after realizing who was standing in front of her during her acceptance speech. "They did not tell me Janet was coming, bitch."

The crowd erupted into a standing ovation as Jackson, a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, five-time Grammy winner and previous BET Icon recipient, praised Taylor's remarkable rise as one of entertainment's most versatile talents.

"In one year, Teyana Taylor accomplished what most do in a lifetime," Jackson said, highlighting Taylor's Grammy nomination for Escape Room, multiple award nominations for her role in the Oscar-winning One Battle After Another, and her Golden Globe win for Best Supporting Actress.

Jackson also reminded the audience that Taylor had already picked up three other trophies during the ceremony, Fashion Vanguard, Video Director of the Year and Best Actress, making Icon of the Year her fourth win of the night.

Taylor later admitted she had received a hint from Kehlani that Jackson was somewhere inside the building, but she still didn't believe the surprise was real until the music legend appeared.

"When Kehlani said, 'Janet here,' I said, 'bitch, is that the surprise? I wasn't sure,'" Taylor recalled. "I was planning on doing my little side Janet walk. Now I'm running up here."

Fighting back tears, Taylor turned her attention to Jackson.

"I love you so much. Thank you for every text, every hug, every talk," she said. "You are my biggest inspiration."

Then came the line that captured the significance of the moment.

"You don't even understand there would be no me without you."

Taylor's acceptance speech also reflected on the lessons she's learned throughout her career, describing the entertainment industry as a place that often encourages competition over collaboration.

"This business is wicked," she said. "It teaches us to compete. But I've never believed that my success had to cost someone else's theirs. If I know something, I should teach it. If I open a door, I should hold it."

She added, "Greatness isn't measured by how many people stand beneath you. It's measured by how many people stand beside you because you're willing to reach back. That's the only legacy I care about."

Taylor also shared another milestone with the audience, revealing she is set to graduate in September.

She closed the emotional speech by dedicating the award to her daughters, Junie and Rue.

"If one day people remember me as an icon," Taylor said, "I pray the two of you always remember me simply as home."
