After releasing his most vulnerable album yet, Isaiah Rashad said he doesn’t like to be labeled.
The It’s Been Awful rapper discussed being involuntarily positioned as an example while in conversation with Andscape’s David Dennis Jr. Around the nine-minute mark of the video below, Dennis brought up that Rashad is perceived as a “voice” to “different communities.”
“I know that people put that on me, but that's too much pressure, man,” the Top Dawg Entertainment artist replied. “I could see an imperfect reflection like that I could give to somebody, ‘cause I've definitely had that from other artists myself. But being the drug guy and the queer guy–it's too much pressure. I'm just an imperfect person.”
Rashad added that he’s willing to “hug” and “listen” to fans that need an outlet but added that he doesn’t consider himself to be “somebody’s hero.”
The Tennessee native described himself as “sexually fluid” after being the subject of a leaked sex tape that he was allegedly in, and during a recent Pigeons and Planes conversation with alt-rock musician Dominic Fike, he joked about not receiving “Frank Ocean perks” after coming out. Ocean, who’s released two studio albums to date, came out as bisexual in a 2012 open letter posted to Tumblr.
