AllStar JR’s legal team is seeking to delay his federal firearm trial.
On Monday (June 22), the Detroit rapper’s attorney, John M. Helms, filed a motion for a 60-day continuance, which would move the trial start date from July 7, 2026 to September.
Court documents obtained by Complex show that Helms has requested the postponement so “that defense counsel will have time to review discovery, investigate the case, confer with Defendant, and determine whether the case can be resolved without trial.”
In late April, JR was charged in connection with a restaurant shooting that reportedly involved NBA Ben10. JR is accused of opening fire inside a Houston restaurant in early April and is facing federal gun charges after investigators say the incident was caught on surveillance video.
In the filing, Helms states that JR has only received one of the security videos, but not the rest of discovery. Helms also points out that the shooting case is “the subject of a pending case of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in Harris County,” which Helms explains adds a “layer of complexity.”
NBA Ben10 has suffered "irreversible paralysis” due to the alleged shooting, for which JR is now facing a felony charge of aggravated assault - traumatic brain or spine injury in Harris County.
JR allegedly shot Ben10, with surveillance video showing a person identified as JR fighting with several individuals who seemed to attempt to rob him. During the altercation, a gun appeared to fall to the floor, and AllStar allegedly opened fire on three individuals.
Investigators said Ben10 was struck by gunfire and fell to the floor, at which point, JR allegedly fired three more rounds at him at close range, and tried to shoot him in the head before realizing he was out of ammunition. Police added that he pistol-whipped Ben10, spat on his face, and fled the scene.
