Key Takeaways

  • Justin Timberlake is reportedly preparing a four-part Apple TV “tell-all” directed by Fisher Stevens for a December premiere, according to Variety.
  • Janet Jackson reportedly revisits their 2004 Super Bowl performance in the series, while Timberlake addresses recent comments from Britney Spears.
  • Jackson bore most of the Super Bowl fallout, including radio and music-channel blacklisting; Timberlake publicly apologized to her and Spears in 2021.

Justin Timberlake is reportedly making a four-part docuseries for Apple TV, and Janet Jackson is said to be part of it.

Three sources told Variety that the project is billed as a "tell-all" and directed by Fisher Stevens.

One of those sources said Jackson appears in the series and talks about the infamous "wardrobe malfunction" from the pair's 2004 Super Bowl performance. A different source said Timberlake responds to some of the recent comments made by his ex-girlfriend Britney Spears.

Representatives for Timberlake, Jackson and Apple either declined to comment or did not answer Variety’s repeated requests.

Jackson's involvement carries real weight. About 150 million people were watching on Feb. 1, 2004, when Timberlake, a surprise guest at the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show in Houston, pulled off part of her costume on the last line of "Rock Your Body" (“I better have you naked by the end of this song”), exposing her nipple — adorned with a shield — in a controversy that came to be known as “Nipplegate".”

Most of the fallout landed on Jackson. Viacom and its subsidiaries pulled her singles and videos from many radio and music channels, and the FCC fined CBS a record $550,000, which a federal appeals court later threw out.

Almost a decade and a half later, Timberlake went on to headline the Super Bowl LII halftime show in 2018.

His apologies came in stages. At the 2004 Grammys, he called the moment "unintentional, completely regrettable," according to Billboard. In February 2021, after the Framing Britney Spears documentary came out, he posted an apology on Instagram addressed to both women.

"I specifically want to apologize to Britney Spears and Janet Jackson both individually, because I care for and respect these women and I know I failed," he wrote at the time.

The docuseries comes after a rough few years for Timberlake.

His most recent album, Everything I Thought It Was, arrived in March 2024 and received mixed reviews. That June, his DWI arrest in Sag Harbor, New York, ended with a guilty plea to a lesser impaired-driving charge and 25 hours of community service.

In July 2025, as his Forget Tomorrow tour was ending, he revealed a Lyme disease diagnosis that had affected his shows.

In September, he made a guest appearance at Jay-Z's concert in Paris to perform “Holy Grail.” Last month, Timberlake appeared on Quavo’s new song "House Music.”

Sources tell Variety that Timberlake’s series premieres on Apple TV in December.
