Universal Works Spring/Summer 2016 collection ushers in a new era for the baggy look

If we took anything away from the superb LC:M Spring/Summer 2016 shows, it’s that baggy is back in a big way. This was confirmed after marquee labels like Burberry and Alexander McQueen reverted to a looser silhouettes for their new collections, following the lead of designers like Craig Green. Also taking on the baggy renaissance is contemporary menswear label Universal Works, who from the jump refused to conform to the skinny fit trend.

While most folks will associate the baggy style with hip-hop’s golden age (aka the '90s) this iteration is a far cry from that aesthetic. Rather than just sagging at the waist and dragging on the floor (due to an absence of Timbaland Boots) the new cuts sit at the hips, are tapered and rolled at the bottom to reveal the ankle, hitting all the current trend touchpoints.

The new Spring/Summer 2016 collection takes inspiration from a hugely varied list of sources, including Edwardian floor tiles and Wes Anderson films. The latter of those inspirations is quite obvious, due to the stringent and limited colour palette of navy, camel, white, and grey, all of which frequently appear throughout the series of loose fitting trousers. On top of that, the fabric used to produce these loose fitted pieces vary and is intended to feel light, airy and breathable with slightly contrasting degrees of bagginess. Yet all remain firm to their fundamental ethos that baggy is better.

Complimenting the loose fitting trousers, the collection also includes a range of outerwear, shorts, shirts and T-shirts.

Universal Works Spring/Summer 2016 collection is available now from their webstore and select retailers including: Oi Polloi, Number Six, END Clothing and Goodhood. For a closer look at the collection peep the gallery below.
