While working as a meter reader in Haifei, Chinese street photographer Tao Liu began snapping photos of the people and things that caught his eye with his Fujifilm X100. Fast forward three years, and Liu is one of China's top emerging street photographers, becoming a household name after his work went viral back in October.

TIME Magazine writes that his images "poke fun at contemporary issues in China—from overindulging parents to commercialism and the boundless urban expansion." Timing is a big part of street photography because the subjects often aren't in on the process and are busy living their own lives. Liu's sense of timing is so perfect that a lot of his images seem staged.
