RSVP Gallery has just introduced Kris Van Assche to its inventory. And to celebrate, the Chicago retailer created a killer editorial that highlights the French label’s Fall/Winter 2014 line.
Photographed by Anthony Trevino, the shoot showcases the collection in a dark and off-kilter manner that mirrors the inspiration behind the range. We see multiple shots of the same model Photoshopped together to create a visually stunning collage-like image, which is propelled by the use of black-and-white duplicates and patterned grouping. This kind of illustration is a clear reference to John Baldessari, an American artist whose work inspired Kris Van Assche’s current line.
From a raglan-sleeve wool bomber and bold-print tees to relaxed denim pants and tracksuit trousers, we see subtle nods to Baldessari’s conceptual art, specifically his use of appropriation. But the most evident is within the hybrid garments that literally fuse streetwear with traditional menswear. A shirt with a button-up lower panel is revamped with a ribbed crew neck and cuffed sleeves on the top, while a cotton poplin is reworked with a ribbed stand-up collar and arm cuffs.
