Unless you’ve been completely living under a rock, you’ll know that Rihanna completely shut down the CFDA Awards earlier this year when she showed up to receive her 2014 Style Icon of the Year award in a custom see-through gown by Adam Selman that was adorned with 230,000 Swarovski crystals and left absolutely nothing to the imagination. What you might not know is that Tom Ford also made a bid to dress the singer for the evening. In a new article on his site, he’s sharing what he thinks about Rih snubbing him for a different designer, and his comments might surprise you.

Ford, who also received a Lifetime Achievement award that evening, says that Rihanna was “that night, one of the most beautiful women” he had ever beheld, and though he designed several pieces for her that evening which she chose not to wear, when he saw her “it did not matter.” He even told her that “she was right not to have worn one of (his) dresses” because she looked more beautiful than he had ever seen her look. He also revealed that his longtime partner Richard Buckley said of the singer, “If you are as beautiful as Rihanna, you almost owe it to the world to appear in public almost nude,” a statement to which Ford “wholeheartedly concur(red).”

Ford has spoken about his love for Rihanna in the past, calling her Instagram posts more influential than most fashion critics these days. The adoration is obviously mutual: just the other night Rihanna showed up at the amfAR Inspiration Gala in L.A. wearing a daring gown from his collection that is essentially just a topless dress with nipple pasties. We assume Ford was pretty pleased to see the singer in the daring style which he says has potential among “young women who have the bodies to pull it off.” If anyone can, it’s Rih Rih.
