Movember is finally upon us, which means guys across the world have committed to a monthlong mustache-growing challenge in an effort to raise awareness about men’s health issues. But how effective is this movement?

With a rapidly growing participation rate, “No Shave November” has been often criticized as a lazy way to be philanthropic, because let’s face it, growing facial hair requires little to no work. On top of that, many critics suggest the majority of men who partake in the challenge are not aware of what it means and simply use it as an excuse to abandon time-consuming grooming. And while that may be the case for some, there’s actually a lot of evidence proving Movember has become a quite beneficial in the fight against prostate cancer.

In 2003, a few Melbourne friends dared each other to go an entire month without shaving, strictly for shits and giggles. However, the rebellious freedom that came with the challenge really struck a chord with the guys, so they decided to look for another reason to do it again. And what better reason than to promote awareness about one of the leading causes of death among men?

Within a decade, Movember has grown into a global phenomenon, attracting over 4 million participants in five continents and raising $559M for prostate cancer awareness. Pretty damn impressive for something that started out as a trivial dare.

If you're still on the fence about getting in on the action, then you should definitely check out the info graphics below that break down the history and success of Movember. You can also learn more about movement and donate to the cause at Movember.com.
