Bill Cunningham, a New York Times veteran and the man credited for being the original street style photographer, rarely grants interviews. But he agreed to speak at the 92nd Street Y as part of Fern Mallis' Fashion Talks series last night. According to Mallis, she was able to persuade Cunningham after the legendary photographer felt sorry for spilling her drink at the CFDA Awards. Well, thank god, because some of the things Cunningham shared were great.
During the conversation, Cunningham told Mallis that before he rode his bicycle everywhere, he drove a custom-made 1934 Rolls-Royce that he bought used for $500. Yup, a Rolls-Royce for five bills.
As for his signature blue jacket, Cunningham told Mallis that he's upset the quality has changed, saying they now feel like "dishcloths," and they cost $55.
He also talked about his experience dyeing a red suit black for Jackie Kennedy to wear to JFK's funeral while he worked at a women's boutique in New York.
Oh, and if you're wondering, in case you want to try to catch him on the street and try your luck at getting street styled, Cunningham's favorite time to take pictures is 8:30 a.m.
