Up-and-coming menswear label Drapeau Noir is off to a great start.

Literally translating to “Black Flag,” Drapeau Noir isn’t as political as its name might suggest, but according to founder Nicolas Barbier, the anarchist reference is used to promote a sense of freedom and fearlessness for stylish guys. This explains why the brand's primary sources of inspiration are 1970s counterculture and French sartorial tradition. Just think Easy Rider meets Jean Paul Belmondo.

“I try to combine all these influences by cultivating a certain form of minimalism and discretion, components of my brand of elegance,” Barbier told Style No Chaser.

The overall aesthetic leans toward simplicity, comfort, and versatility.  There’s nothing experimental or radical about this inaugural fall/winter 2014 collection. It’s just straight-forward, classic garments like oxford shirts, crewneck sweatshirts, flannels, and tees made from top-tier Japanese fabrics. Understated patterns and subdue color palettes complete the effortless look that will transition from season to season.
