We announced yesterday that Ai Weiwei fans will soon see the release of his first monograph, published through Taschen, and now there may be another first for the artist on the horizon. The Art Newspaper reports that New York-based fund manager Christopher Tsai wants to open a museum dedicated to Weiwei "most likely in New York," which he will fill with pieces from his own extensive collection.

Tsai and his husband André Stockamp own over 40 of Ai Weiwei's drawings and sculptures, some of which date back to the 1970s, but he says that they are still building their collection so the museum could take some time.

Ai Weiwei currently has an exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, and details have finally been released for the @Large exhibition on Alcatraz Island, but the artist is still restricted from leaving China to see his work displayed in person. Perhaps by the time the museum is established, Weiwei will be free and will be invited to attend the opening.
