In this wacky design concept by Hong Kong firm OVA Studio, temporary residence meets sustainability meets Jenga. Plans for the Hive-Inn envision a towering structure made from individual (and of course, recycled) cargo units that can be removed and relocated with ease from a sturdy grid-like framework.

While it’s primary function will be as a hotel, the architects have designed the building so that individual crates can be sent away without the whole arrangement crumbling to pieces. Containers can be emergency air-lifted out when there is need for urgent medical care and housing; they can also be leased by individuals or companies for office space and other private ventures. This flexibility allows the hotel to contract out space when demand for short-term sleeping arrangements is low, but also to quickly add space when demand is high.

The clever design concept also offers advertising opportunities. Companies could sponsor individual boxes, outfitting the containers with brand-toting insignia and memorabilia. Just imagine what the Swarovski room would look like.
