Whatever ride your parents bought you for your 16th birthday, it was probably nowhere near as cool as any of the cars that will go on view at High Museum of Art next month. "Dream Cars: Innovative Design, Visionary Ideas" will gather 17 concept cars from across Europe and the United States to be showcased in the Atlanta museum. It will spotlight the most imaginative, cutting-edge automobiles from the 1930s to the 21st century.
The exhibition will pair some of the rarest cars designed by Ferrari, Bugatti, General Motors, and Porsche with conceptual drawings, patents, and scale models to show how these imagined models paved the way for the future of design. Highlights include an electric bubble car by Arzens, the original minivan, Marcello Gandini's 33-inch-tall car, a BMW covered in fabric, and a full-scale rendering of a Carl Renner design.
It's a pity most of the cars that will go on view were never intended for series production. We could see ourselves getting really comfortable in the dope "Runabout" car pictured above. "Dream Cars" will open May 21 and be on view through Sept. 7. In the meantime, check out some of the other cars that will go on view.
