Ibid Projects in London recently opened an exhibition featuring the photographic work of Karen Knorr and Olivier Richon. The photographs in "PUNKS" document the London Punk scene between 1976 and 1977 in well-known clubs during their heyday, including the Roxy and Covent Garden. The exhibition is said to celebrate the "girl power of the 1970s," reflecting a time when female musicians were at the head of the once male dominated culture.
Of the shooting process, the photographers said in a statement: "Our starting point was to get away from the candid photography strategy of the invisible but truthful hit and run photographer, as well as avoiding the rough grainy picture associated with that mode of working. We chose a direct confrontation with our subject. This is why our pictures are posed, affirming our presence instead of eluding it."
In addition to the exhibition, Knorr and Richon will be selling copies of their new book. Also entitled "PUNKS," it was made in collaboration with GOST Books and is limited to 1,000 copies. For more information, visit the Ibid Projects site.
