News of Nicola Formichetti's new position as Artistic Director of Diesel came with a huge campaign pegged as a reboot for the brand. Now, as his first capsule collection for the brand starts to roll into stores (the denim capsule releases in this month, while the leather capsule drops in Feburary), we get a closer look at how the Diesel Tribute collection came to be.

Check out this behind-the-scenes video of Formichetti and Diesel founder, Renzo Rosso, talking about the inspiration behind the Diesel Tribute collection, which celebrates the brand's 35th anniversary, and the campaign, shot exclusively on an iPhone by photographer Nick Knight. Yes, just an iPhone.

For those who don't know, the Diesel Tribute collection is Formichetti's first for the brand before his designs for Diesel's main line hits stores next fall. Formichetti revisited Diesel's previously untapped 35-year historical archive and use that for inspiration, paying tribute to the DNA of the label.

“This collection is my homage to the DNA of Diesel,” Formichetti said. “Visiting the Diesel factories in Italy was incredible. The decision to use these found materials from the archive in a new way was immediate. These new, limited edition and artisanal explorations of denim and leather are two very important steps into designing the future of Diesel."
