German multimedia designer Georg Fischer, taking inspiration from a similar project, uses script to create glitches in photos via the online project hosting service GitHub. We won't attempt to explain exactly how it works, but Fischer explains that the "corrupts some bytes in a JPG image. Because of the way JPG encoding works, the corrupted file still shows something." That "something" is a cool change in the way the photo looks, sometimes creating a completely new visual image. We're used to seeing accidental glitches on computers and in video games, but to intentionally cause the corruption is a different story. Fischer's experiment allows the user to "control" four variables: glitch amount, seed, iterations, and JPG quality. We played around with the project a bit and created these awesome glitchy pieces of art. Head over to Fischer's project site here to create your own.
