It seems like every influental movement is focused around a group of like-minded individuals who work around a similar aesthetic and shake up pre-established notions of design. In the fashion world, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more lauded collective than the Antwerp Six. Comprised of Marina Yee, Dries Van Noten, Ann Demeulemeester, Dirk Bikkembergs,Walter Van Beirendonck, and Dirk VanSaene, they helped introduce the world to Belgian design, a tradition carried on by names like Raf Simons, Kris Van Assche, and Oliver Theyskiens.
The six are known for their modern and minimal take on design, and recently reunited at their alma mater, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, where they rated the work of masters students. They also reminisced on how the experience they've all undergone since they first emerged onto the fashion scene 30 years ago.
"It was a hell of a ride and I don’t regret a minute,'" Bikkembergs told The New York Times. But he regrets that he wasn't more self-aware of how impactful the group's meeting was. "I was never so conscious about it. When you are young, it is different and I regret it now that I didn’t live it 100 percent," Bikkembergs said.
Still, to this day, the designers influence one another and connect on a regular basis.
“[There are a] lot of memories coming back—but not so much, as we see quite a lot of each other,'’ Van Noten added.
