On November 21, 1963, John F. Kennedy spent a night at the Hotel Texas in Fort Worth before heading to Dallas, where unanticipated events lead to the president's assassination. In honor of the First Couple's visit to their city, local collectors, working with the Fort Worth Art Association and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, prepared 16 borrowed artworks that were displayed in Suite 850 in an exclusive exhibition for JFK and Jackie. Among them were Monet's Portrait of the Artist's Granddaughter, Picasso's Angry Owl, van Gogh's Road with Peasant Shouldering a Spade, and Thomas Eakin's The Swimming Hole, which were selected according to the couple's known tastes.

An exhibition opening on May 26 at the Dallas Museum of Art marks the 50th anniversary of JFK's assassination by showcasing the art he enjoyed on the last night of his life. "Hotel Texas: An Art Exhibition for the President and Mrs. John F. Kennedy, A Reunion of Masterworks Exhibited in the Hotel Suite of the Presidential Couple" will open at the Dallas Museum then be displayed at the Amon Carter Museum in October.
