In 1863, a correctional facility opened in Roermond, The Netherlands, housing cycles of prisoners until its closing in 2002. Today, as a result of a 2007 renovation project byVan der Valk Design, the site is now the luxurious Arrest Hotel. While the original penitentiary contained over 150 holding cells, the new hotel now includes 36 rooms and seven suites—with names like Director, Warden, Lawyer, and Judge. The hotel maintains a prison theme throughout, with some structures kept and others added. The exterior facade, cell block, iron staircases and barred windows remain, while steel doors were newly installed to lead to bathrooms in order to keep a consistency in the refined prison aesthetic.
