On Saturday, Iván Fandiño, a 36-year-old Spanish matador, was gored to death by a bull named Burp after he stumbled in the ring following a slip on his own cape. The incident went down in Southern France.

The goring resulted in punctures of many vital organs, including Fandiño's kidneys, lungs, and heart.

Earlier in the day, Fandiño's Twitter account showed a picture of him holding a bull's ear from another fight he had engaged in just prior to his fatal confrontation. He is said to have told his peers, who can be seen carrying him out of the ring, "Hurry up, I'm dying."

Though a Spanish bullfighter was gored to death during a competition that was being aired on live TV last year, Fandiño's death is reportedly the first such bullfighting human fatality in France since 1921. However, it should be noted that such fights weren't legal in the country until 2012.

The five-year-old bull in the video was also seriously injured, and was subsequently put down afterward. The Humane Society released a statement on the events that unfolded. "For the 1,000 bulls brutally killed in French bullfights every year, every single fight is a tragedy in which they have no chance of escaping a protracted and painful death," the statement read. "Bloodsports like this should be consigned to the history books, no one should lose their life for entertainment, human or animal."
