Gregg Popovich is all set for the Western Conference Finals, the first playoff matchup between two 60-plus win teams since 2006—another series that involved the Spurs (and the Mavericks). Despite San Antonio’s impressive six-game series win against Houston, and of course Pop’s history in the playoffs, the Spurs are heavy underdogs against the loaded Warriors.

Pop certainly has this series on his mind, but he’s also known for keeping his finger on the pulse of bigger-picture issues in modern America. He didn’t pass up an opportunity to comment on the state of the country Sunday.

Popovich was asked, “do you get distracted by what’s happening in the outside world?” The question was likely a reference to Trump's controversial firing of FBI head James Comey.

Popovich, who has been outspoken about American political issues before, called Trump “embarrassing” and “dangerous to our institutions.”

“For this individual, he’s in a game show,” Popovich said. “Everything that happens begins and ends with him, not our people or our country.”

Spurs-Warriors tipped off in Golden State Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. EST. The winner will rep the West.

The Eastern Conference Finals will get underway Wednesday in Cleveland, with LeBron James and company awaiting their next victim (err, opponent). The semis wrap up Monday night with the Wizards taking on the Celtics in Game 7, after John Wall put the team on his back and drilled a three in the final seconds of Game 6 to give Washington one last breath.
