Steph Curry's current contract runs out after this season. That means there's a chance, albeit a very small chance, that he'll leave the Bay Area for a new team this summer. Whether that makes you nervous or hopeful probably depends upon where you live.
Regardless of where he signs, Curry is going to get a big raise. His current contract, which he signed back in 2012, called for him to make $44 million over four years. However, thanks to the NBA's new CBA, Curry can now sign a massive contract worth more than $200 million over five years if he decides to stay with the Warriors or about $140 million over four years if he takes his talents to a new team. Either way, he's in line to get paid in a major way.
That being said, he still has to make it through this season before he cashes out, and until that happens, he will remain the fourth-highest paid player on his own team behind Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, and Kevin Durant. And while that might make some NBA players mad and cause tension between teammates, having three other guys on the Warriors roster that make more dough than him doesn't seem to stress Curry out. He appeared on a Mercury News podcast recently and said that he's just fine with where he's at right now as far as finances are concerned.
"One thing my pops always told me is you never count another man's money. It's what you've got and how you take care of it," Curry said. "And if I'm complaining about $44 million over four years, then I've got other issues in my life."
Of course, it's easy to say that when you're preparing to sign a contract that will have eight zeroes on it soon. But still, well said, Steph.
Elsewhere in the interview, Curry also addressed his free agency and said that he doesn't have any plans to go anywhere this summer. Of course, nothing is set in stone, but it sounds like he's going to stay in the Bay. "Like I’ve said from Day 1 when I was first asked about free agency, this is a perfect place to play," Curry said. "Bay Area fans are amazing, our organization’s amazing, we’ve put together an amazing team that’s competing for championships every year. There’s really no reason that I can see right now that would draw me elsewhere."
Or in other words, the Warriors should start getting that $200 million contract ready now. Curry won't be the fourth-highest paid player on the team for long.
