New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles has been hospitalized with what the Jets are calling an “undisclosed illness.” Details of Bowles’ sickness are scant.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network has reported Bowles had chest and abdominal pains, and was vomiting. Bowles underwent tests at the hospital and was feeling better Friday night, Rapoport reports.

Bowles did not travel with the Jets to New England. The AFC East rivals will square off in Foxboro Saturday at 1 p.m., and it is not known whether Bowles will be able to make a last-minute trip to coach.

A statement on the Jets’ website announcing the hospitalization was short and vague, though it did mention Bowles is in stable condition.

If he doesn’t make the trip, assistant head coach Mike Caldwell will fill in. For more details on Caldwell, a former NFL linebacker, read this.

Could Bowles’ hospitalization be due to stress? The Jets are 4-10, and Bryce Petty is currently their starting quarterback. This season has not gone as planned. Though Bowles, 53, led New York to a 10-6 mark in his first year at the helm, some have questioned whether his job is secure.

Being an NFL head coach is a very high-stress job. Bowles is the third head coach to be hospitalized this season. Mike Zimmer (Minnesota) and Gary Kubiak (Denver) both missed games this fall.

Here's hoping this was nothing more than a minor scare and Bowles will return to the sidelines soon.
