Steph Curry is going to become an NBA free agent next summer. It's something that hasn't been discussed much thus far during the 2016-17 NBA season, which is mostly because everyone, including us, thinks he'll stay put in the Bay Area. But it will become more of an issue as the season moves forward. NBA fans simply can't resist the endless speculation that comes along with free agency.

TheCharlotte Observer got the ball rolling on Tuesday by asking Curry what he thinks it would be like for him to play basketball for the Hornets in Charlotte, the city where he grew up. It's not the first time he's been asked that question, but now that he's set to become a free agent, there's actually a chance, albeit a small chance, that it could happen. So he was asked if he would ever seriously consider it. "I don't know," he said.

That's not exactly a ringing endorsement for the idea of Curry signing with the Hornets, but Curry went on to say that it's still "hard to say" what he'll do this summer when he becomes a free agent, leaving the door open to the possibility of him signing with a new team. "Obviously, I had a strong tie to Charlotte and would have loved to play there," he said, referencing the fact that he would have been more open to it earlier in his career before he became such a key piece of the Warriors franchise. "I'm very comfortable in that city. It's hard to say exactly what the situation will be this summer."

Curry also added that he hasn't put all that much thought into free agency as a whole. "It's on my radar," he said, "but it's not really on my mind as much day-to-day. I'm just trying to enjoy what this season is going to bring."

Warriors fans probably don't have anything to worry about here. We can't see Curry leaving the Warriors next summer, especially if they make another trip to the NBA Finals. But we should point out that Curry did tell the Wall Street Journal that "curveballs happen all the time" in free agency during a recent interview. So maybe Steph staying with Golden State isn't as much of a slam dunk as we think it is?

Feel free to spend the next eight months speculating about it.
