Bill Simmons’ HBO show Any Given Wednesday started off with a bang back in June thanks to a pretty crazy Deflategate rant that Ben Affleck went on during the debut episode. A clip of Affleck slurring and taking aim at the NFL for going after Tom Brady went viral, and it looked like Simmons might have a hit on his hands.
But since then, the show has failed to make the same kind of noise on a consistent basis. So on Friday, HBO announced that it is pulling the plug on AGW. HBO is going to continue to partner with Simmons on future projects, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, the company is still going to be a minority investor in the Bill Simmons Media Group. But AGW is officially over. Simmons acknowledged the show is ending after just four months in a statement released Friday afternoon.
"One of the many reasons I joined HBO was to see if we could create a show built around smart conversations for sports fans and pop culture junkies," he said in the statement. "We loved making that show, but unfortunately, it never resonated with audiences like we hoped. And that’s on me. But I love being a part of HBO’s family and look forward to innovating with them on other ambitious programming ideas over these next several years—both for the network and for digital."
The final episode of AGW is scheduled to air on Nov. 9. THR is reporting that the show averaged about 200,000 viewers every week but only brought in 82,000 viewers on Oct. 26.
