Sorry, Kevin Durant and Steph Curry, but your own head coach doesn't think either one of you will be named MVP this season. When asked about the likelihood of Durant getting the MVP trophy this year, Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr used a comparison to this year's presidential election to give his prediction. “I think (Kevin Durant) is kinda like Gary Johnson, a third-party guy who might come in and take a few votes from Steph (Curry), takes some votes from LeBron (James),” Kerr said, according to an SFGATE story published on Sunday. “Then, Damian Lillard wins the election. That's my forecast.”
While the odds of Lillard being named the 2016-17 MVP seem slim, the Portland Trail Blazers star point guard set a personal goal for himself this year, and you can probably guess what it is. “I want to be the MVP," Dame told reporters, per the Portland Tribune. "If we come out and do the things we’re capable of doing as a team, if we win games, that means my performance will be at the level of an MVP.”
As for Kerr, if there's anyone who knows what Dame is capable of, it's him. Even though the Trail Blazers lost three of four games against the Warriors last season, Lillard always came to play, averaging 36.5 points per game while shooting 47.5 percent from the field, and 51.1 percent from beyond the arc.
Once again, Kerr refuses to give his vote for league MVP to someone in a Warriors uniform.
