As the college football season gets underway within a matter of two weeks, this is the worst timing for the AP preseason No. 11-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish to get into this kind of trouble with the law. But then again, what would the college football season be without controversy during the year, right?

According to South Bend, Indiana-based The Observer, six Notre Dame players were arrested on Friday night in two separate incidents. The first had occurred at 10:07 p.m. when 5 players in a 2007 Ford Focus, which had an improper taillight, were pulled over by police in a traffic stop. The cops discovered a marijuana smell in the vehicle and a gun without a license to carry it. It all went down in Fulton County, Ind., which is about 45 miles from the school's campus.

The Fighting Irish's senior safety Max Redfield, sophomore LB Te’von Coney, sophomore RB Dexter Williams, sophomore CB Ashton White, and freshman WR Kevin Stepherson now have an arrest record, which is probably something they won't boast on their resumes. They also face possible dismissal from the university stemming from the charges. Possession of a handgun without a license to carry is also considered a misdemeanor.

The second arrest was an unrelated incident that involved senior CB Devin Butler, who had been arrested early Saturday morning at 12:28 a.m. in South Bend for resisting arrest and battery against a police officer.

Butler was taken into custody at St. Joseph County Jail to spend the night there. University VP of Public Affairs and Communications Paul Browne released this statement regarding the arrests of the Fighting Irish's six players.

The Irish play their first game of the season on Sept. 4 against the Texas Longhorns. Best believe that these players will not be anywhere near their team's sidelines that day.
