Derrick Gordon has more than big checks and life as a professional basketball player on his mind after he played his final college basketball game for the Seton Hall Pirates in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season. After helping lead the Pirates to become the 2016 Big East Tournament champions, and their first NCAA tournament berth since the 2005-2006 season, men's college basketball's first openly gay player is looking to become a firefighter in San Francisco.

Gordon averaged 8.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.0 steals in each category per game last season coming off the bench for the Hall.  He also contributed with a 41.1 field goal percentage and averaged 9.7 points per game in 134 college contests overall.

Since he wasn't selected in the NBA Draft last month, Gordon tweeted on Friday, July 22, that he is taking his talents to San Francisco to become a hero saving people from burning buildings. He formerly announced that he'll train to join the San Francisco Fire Department.

Had an amazing basketball career but it's time for a change...I will now work to become a San Francisco Firefighter! pic.twitter.com/pIk1yfNWhG

He also restated his new career goals on his IG account:

As a transfer player, Gordon became the first player to play in the NCAA tournament for three different schools. The previous programs he played for and attended were Western Kentucky and UMass-Amherst. Instead of putting up numbers on the boards as a pro baller, he's putting out fires to help his newfound community.
