Professional athletes don’t usually hold press conferences to announce that they've failed a drug test. Most of them wait until after the news has come out to be apologetic about it. But earlier today, Maria Sharapova revealed that she failed a drug test at the Australian Open during a press conference that she held in Los Angeles to try and explain what happened. During the press conference, Sharapova said that she tested positive for Meldonium, which was added to the World Anti-Doping Agency’s list of banned substances on the first day of 2016. She also said that she has been taking the drug for about a decade now. But she said that, despite that, she is sorry about testing positive for it.
“I made a huge mistake,” she said. “I don’t want to end my career this way.”
Not everyone is buying Sharapova's excuse. Former tennis star Jennifer Capriati had this to say about it a short time ago:
