At the moment, the Warriors are undoubtedly the best team in the NBA. Outside of the fact that they won the NBA championship back in June, they have started the 2015-16 NBA season by putting together a 19-0 record and look like they have a real chance at breaking the record the Bulls set back in 1996 by finishing a season 72-10. But are they also on the verge of becoming a team that casual NBA fans hate?
That seems to be the sentiment right now. Over the course of the last few weeks, we have seen more than a few people wonder when NBA fans are going to turn their backs on the best team in basketball. It’s typically what happens when you are as good as the Warriors are. And an incident that reportedly took place in the Warriors’ locker room last night probably won't help the team's cause.
Jazz reporter Ben Dowsett, who covers the team for the Salt City Hoops, spent a few minutes in the Golden State locker room last night and was surprised by how the Warriors reacted to their 106-103 win over the Jazz. It was one of Golden State’s closest games of the season, but according to Dowsett, the Warriors seemed to downplay their opponent with Steph Curry and Draymond Green laughing at one point when they saw a fan tweet about how the Jazz are playing “like champions” on a TV in the locker room.
We should point out that it appears as though Dowsett was besieged with tweets from angry Warriors fans after he reported what he saw—including more than a few that, unfortunately, insinuated that he is a racist—but here is his full account of what took place in the locker room:
Dowsett later admitted that he misheard Curry's response to a question about the Jazz’s defense:
But he is sticking with his story about Green and Curry laughing at the fan tweet that they saw on TV:
For what it’s worth, Jazz center Rudy Gobert also posted this on Twitter, seemingly in response to what Dowsett was reporting:
If what Dowsett reported is true, it’s not the end of the world. The Warriors are entitled to behave however they want to behave in their own locker room. But it’ll be interesting to see how casual NBA fans react to stories like this as the season moves on.
