Sad news to report from the racing world. Jules Bianchi suffered severe head injuries when he crashed into a crane at last year's Japanese Grand Prix. He's been in a coma since then.

After showing little signs of improvement, Bianchi's family announced in a statement that he's dead at the age of 25. He passed away in Centre Hospitalier Universitair in his hometown of Nice, France.

It is with deep sadness that the parents of Jules Bianchi, Philippe and Christine, his brother Tom and sister Mélanie, wish to make it known that Jules passed away last night at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU) in Nice, (France) where he was admitted following the accident of 5th October 2014 at Suzuka Circuit during the Japanese Formula 1 Grand Prix.

Bianchi competed in 34 races over the course of two seasons. His highest finish was ninth place in last year's Monaco Grand Prix. The finish scored the first championship points in team Marussia F1's short history.

Bianchi's tragic death is Formula One's first race fatality since Ayrton Senna’s crash in 1994.
